Our Sustainability Mission and Goals
Sustainability
Overall Mission
Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a movement that’s reshaping industries worldwide, especially in coffee. Throughout my career working with blue-chip companies, I’ve seen firsthand how the push for sustainability is gaining momentum.
In exploring certifications like Rainforest Alliance, one issue became clear: the money trail is often murky. While these certifications serve a purpose, at Behind the Label, we believe there’s a more direct and meaningful way to make an impact with our coffee partners.
Take this for example: we work with a producer whose farm is already Rainforest Alliance Certified. To use their seal on our packaging, every player in the supply chain has to pay a premium to the certifier. Not only does this introduce extra costs, but it also means involving RFA reps and creating more paperwork for producers—something they’d prefer to avoid.
Our approach at Behind the Label is different. Instead of paying that premium to a third-party certifier, we give it directly to the farmer. By doing so, we’re able to reinvest that money into farm-level projects that truly make a difference—whether it’s establishing a community garden, providing English lessons to workers, or improving local infrastructure.
As a startup, we’re still in the early stages of planning our first initiatives, but transparency is at the heart of everything we do. As we save and work toward these goals, we’ll share every step of the journey with our customers and partners.
Our company is collaborating with the Santa Antonio farm to support sustainable coffee production by paying a premium on each coffee sold. We’re inviting our customers who serve this coffee to join us by contributing a similar premium. Together, we aim to create a community-driven initiative among Irish cafes that actively supports and invests in coffee producers at the source.
Packaging:
Our wholesale packaging is not only CO2 neutral but also fully recyclable, ensuring minimal environmental impact. Our retail packaging is fully recyclable.
Sourcing:
We carefully select producers who share our values. Take Santa Antonio, for example—a farm that runs entirely on solar energy and is 100% self-sufficient.
